There have been too many talent hunt reality shows on our screens and all of them are centered on singing, dancing and modeling. Thus, entertainment reality shows have saturated every TV station you can think of in Ghana but wait a minute, haven’t you noticed the invasion of sports reality shows lately?
I wouldn’t say I am tired of the Mentors, Stars of the Futures, Dance Fevers, Miss Malaikas among others because I do enjoy watching them. But we definitely need some diversity here other than entertainment and fashion. I mean, there should be other talent hunt reality shows which would focus on other fields like sports, agriculture, craft works, business and more. Do you catch my drift?
I mean, these reality shows have a common aim and that is to explore and develop the talents in our youth but all the youth in this country cannot be singers and models and dancers at the same time. If every youth was to be in the showbiz field, who would be the entertainer and who would be the audience? There are young people with other talents far different from the showbiz field and these needs to be exploited as well.
Sports is one field which has brought a lot of success and wealth to many young people who have the talent and honestly, most of them are even far wealthier than some so called stars in the entertainment field. Just imagine the amount of money Michael Essien, Stephen Appiah and Eric Addo are making in the field of soccer. How about Ike Quartey and Raymond Narh in the field of boxing. If people really want to help the youth nurture their talents, then this fact should be considered; not everyone is born an entertainer.
Thankfully, we have all heard of Metro TV’s initiative at introducing the “Sports Academy” reality show to cater for young soccer talents who would prospectively carry the mantle of Essien and the likes. Just recently, GTV has also introduced the “Golden Boot” soccer reality show featuring ace footballer and Coach Mohammed Polo.
I just heard from one of my sources that there is about to be a reality show for boxers on TV3 called the “Last Warriors”. This would have contestants challenging each other to exciting bouts of fights in the ring for three months... ouch … three months of enduring broken jaws and black eyes. This reality show starts in August, I hear, and it promises to be exciting. We need more of these reality shows to help our youth have a meaningful life to live in this world of ups and downs...How about a reality show for farmers and carpenters?
