Today the southern zonal screening for Miss Ghana 2008 will take place at the Airport West Hotel, Accra.

At the Miklin Hotel in Kumasi last Saturday, the northern zone semi-final prelims for the Miss Ghana contest took place amidst a lot of fanfare, a few jeers and standing ovations.

The keenly contested pageant saw only nine out of the over 110 hopefuls passing the test. It almost took a pathetic turn as some of the unqualified ladies openly pleaded with the judges to favour them.

The nine ladies who scaled the beauty bar from the northern zone to compete in the semi-final stage were: Cynthia Amanor, Shirley Nwangere, Adwoa Sakyi, Senam Akorli, Nancy Obimpeh, Akpene Bimbo, Adisa Iddrisu, Carol Eyram and Gladys Tetteh.

Last week, 16 fine ladies from the Central zone already booked their places for the semi-finals, which the organisers say is the grand screening to be held on June 7, at the Airport West Hotel, Accra.

It is at the June 7 selection exercise that the 10 finalists will be selected to compete for the final showdown in July to determine who wears the beauty crown in Ghana.

One of the judges, Shirley Frimpong-Manso, who is also the managing director of Sparrow Productions Limited, organisers of the show, has this to say: "We will do everything possible to maintain the high standards that the Miss Ghana pageant has set in the beauty pageant enterprise over the years. It is a task we shall not veer from."

She therefore urged young ladies who aspired to wear the crown to be bold and confident whenever they appeared before judges to show their beauty and intelligence.

In another development, Somovision Ghana Limited, marketers of LG products in the country have reaffirmed their support for the Miss Ghana pageant and renewed its major sponsorship deal with the organisers.

Other major sponsors are Maxim Cosmetics, Airport West Hotel, GTV and Citi FM.

Simbins Furniture, Danny’s Décor, Benita of Winnigol Fashions are also supporting the event while Photo Club, ATL and FC Beauty Klinik are donating products and services towards the smooth running of the 2008 show.
