THE GRAND FINALE of this year’s Mr and Miss SHS contest which features
20 contestants selected from various Senior High Schools would soon
come off.

The big event, scheduled for the National Theatre on August 17, would also see the winners being crowned the national youth ambassadors for the year.

The winners would subsequently take a trip to Canada for the World Youth Program with a cash of GH¢500 each, as well as receive books and computers for their schools.

The programme which is an annual one is to champion the cause of the Ghanaian youth to spearhead outreach programmes on social issues such as HIV/AIDS and drug abuse.

The event aims also at coordinating the rural youth outreach program which is a national response to the rural- urban drift, while working with stakeholders to achieve goals that are beneficial to Ghana’s youth.

The competition is opened to only final year students of senior high schools in the country.

According to a press release, in the year 2000 when Ghana’s media landscape was at its peak, the entertainment content for the youth was heavily influenced by western culture where there was little of Ghanaian entertainment on the airwaves. The release said a youth organization, then with an objective to empower the generation, introduced the concept ‘Mr. and Miss SHS Ghana Contest’.

“This program, with both males and females together on the same stage, seeks to challenge participants to show in three rounds why they should be crowned Ghana’s Youth Ambassadors,” the release said.

The release added: “With the 2008 edition, the event has thus entered its 8th year. Today, we are glad that

every Senior Secondary School student awaits the climax of the event in August with great enthusiasm”.

The release indicated that the Mr. and Mrs. SHS contest will continue to find a role for high school graduates who desire to rekindle the patriotic spirit among the youth.
